Day 2

Amman Jerash

Departure from your hotel for a city tour of Amman. Your guide will show you both ancient and modern aspects of the city, both from your vehicle and on foot, exploring and giving you insights into the lesser known and attractive parts of Jordan’s fascinating capital. Continue northwards from Amman. The drive to Jerash lasts less than an hour. There you will have lunch before visiting the expansive remains of the best preserved of all the ancient Roman Empire’s provincial cities. Jerash became one of the league of cities known as the Decapolis, all of which were given special economic, judicial and trading rights when, in BCE 63, they were incorporated into the Roman Empire. Jerash reached its peak during the first and second centuries, CE. The well preserved theatre, the temples and many of the streets as well as the large oval-shaped forum or agora date from this period. Walking along the ancient streets of Jerash and discovering the city’s remarkably well preserved remains is sure to be one of the highlights of any visit to Jordan.

Day 3

Madaba, Mount Nebo, Wadi Al-Mujeb, Kerak – Petra

After breakfast, drive along the Kingsway Road, visit the town known for its mosaics, Madaba and Mount Nebo. Madaba’s main attraction is the contemporary Greek Orthodox church of St. George in which is a wonderfully vivid, sixth-century Byzantine mosaic map showing Jerusalem and other holy sites. Ten minutes’s drive to the west of Madaba is one of the most revered sites in Jordan: Mount Nebo, the memorial of Moses, the presumed site of the prophet’s death and burial place. A small, square church was built on the spot by early Byzantine Christians-and later expanded into a vast complex. Continue along to Wadi Al-Mujeb reaching Kerak with its old crusader castle, built on a craggy plateau over 3,000 feet (930 metres) above sea level. Later proceed to Petra for overnight stay. B. L. Day 4

Petra

After breakfast, start the Red Rose City of Petra visit. The ancient city of Petra is one of Jordan’s national treasures and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Much of Petra’s appeal comes from its spectacular setting deep inside a narrow desert gorge. The site is accessed by walking through a siq or cleft, more than a kilometre long, the walls of which soar over 200 metres upwards. Petra’s most famous monument, the Treasury or Al Khazneh, appears dramatically at the end of the siq. Discover with your guide the expanse of this extraordinary city, designated as one of the world’s 7 greatest wonders and accepted by most as the most exceptional. Return to hotel in Petra for overnight stay. B. D.****Why not experience Petra by Night as an optional extra?
