Day 2

Madaba, Mount Nebo, Wadi Al-Mujeb, Kerak – Petra

After breakfast, drive along the Kingsway Road, visit the mosaic city of Madaba and Mount Nebo. Madaba’s main attraction is the contemporary Greek Orthodox church of St. George which is a wonderfully vivid, sixth-century Byzantine mosaic map showing Jerusalem and other holy sites. Ten minutes to the west is the most revered site in Jordan: Mount Nebo, the memorial of Moses, the presumed site of the prophet’s death and burial place. A small, square church was built on the spot by early Byzantine Christians-and later expanded into a vast complex. Continue along to Wadi Al-Mujeb Valley reaching Kerak the old crusader castle, built on a craggy plateau 4,300 feet above sea level. Later proceed to Petra for overnight stay. (B)

Day 3

Petra

After breakfast, start the Red Rose City of Petra visit. The ancient city of Petra is one of Jordan’s national treasures and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Much of Petra’s appeal comes from its spectacular setting deep inside a narrow desert gorge. The site is accessed by walking through a kilometre siq, the walls of which soar 200m upwards. Petra’s most famous monument, the Treasury, appears dramatically at the end of the siq. Return to hotel in Petra for overnight stay. (B)****Why not experience Petra by Night? From £15pp*****

Day 4

Wadi Rum

After breakfast, transfer around noon time from Petra to Wadi Rum for a Bedouin 4X4 ride in the desert. This is a magnificent, timeless place, virtually untouched by humanity and its destructive forces. Here the weather and winds have carved the imposing, towering skyscrapers, so elegantly described by T.E. Lawrence as “vast, echoing and God-like…” Later enjoy an authentic Bedouin meal and overnight in a Bedouin Camp located in the desert of Wadi Rum. (B,D)
