The
best time to visit Wadi Rum for climbing
is between mid October and mid April.
Before and after these times it becomes
very hot with afternoon
temperatures rising to 40 degrees C
or above. The 17th of
October is considered the beginning of
winter and by early November there are
often clouds and even thunder storms
with the occasional flash flood.
If you choose to visit in the hotter
months from May to September, it is best to allow a few days
for acclimatisation on shorter and
shadier routes, before attempting the
longer ones. Carry at least two litres of
water per person for the climb, and
extra for the approach etc.
From December to February the days are
shorter and the night time temperatures
can be quite cool. It can be quite cold
if you are climbing in the shade, even
in the afternoon on a warm day. There
can also be cold
winds in this period. There have also been
snowfalls in winter on the summits,
though this melts quickly and is rare.
Petra is at
a higher altitude than Wadi Rum and can
have much colder winter temperatures.
